ABOUT HORTA DOWNHILL CLUB
The Cullera Downhill Race 2025 is the result of the passion and dedication of a group of skaters who joined forces to create a unique event in Valencia. In this interview, Ripo shares their story, their motivation, and the challenges of organizing a freeride in such an iconic location as Cullera.
What is the story behind L'Horta, and why did you decide to form the club?
Well, L'Horta started about 14 years ago. There was an old club called L'Horta Sud, which no longer exists. From there, we recreated a new club, keeping the name to honor our city and region: L'Horta, which means "the huerta" in Spanish. That's how the new Horta was born, but this time without the "Sud" since our team also includes people from Horta Nord, in the north of Valencia, like Andreu.
How long have you been skating together as a team? What brought you together?
Each of us started skating individually, but we’ve been skating together as a team for about 8 or 9 years. We came together through our shared connection to our land, L'Horta.
How do you organize yourselves within the team for this event?
Within the team, everyone has a role. For instance, Andreu is our secretary and also a world champion. Chuso is the treasurer and the only team member officially registered in Cullera, so he’s the real local. I’m the president, but that was a unanimous decision by the team, not something I sought, haha.
Why did you choose Cullera as the location for the event?
Cullera is our iconic Valencian spot. We’ve been skating on this road for 15 years. It’s a unique place: a mountain next to the sea, with incredible views... It was the perfect location for a freeride.
What motivated you to organize an event like this?
We always dreamed of organizing something here. The idea was to promote downhill, a sport we’re passionate about. We wanted to give Spain, and especially Valencia, its own event because other regions like Catalonia and Galicia already had established events, but we were missing ours! Especially since this area has a strong downhill culture.
How does it feel to see your dream come true?
It’s a great personal satisfaction. We don’t make money from this, but seeing 120 people skating on the road where we’ve grown up and trained for so many years... It’s incredible. The effort and gray hairs from organizing it are all worth it. The joy of the people makes up for everything.
CULLERA
A mountainous gem by the sea, nestled between the plains. That’s right, we’re talking about the capital of Ribera Baixa.
This town has always been a fan of wheel sports, and now it’s eager to dive into some hardcore DH on its hills.
I’m talking about the **Montaña de les Raboses**, the one boasting a medieval castle and a legendary lighthouse on the other side.
Here, you can treat yourself to a classic Valencian almorsaret and finish it off with a cremaet that’ll make your day.
A dip in its beaches, internationally known for hosting the "Medusa" festival.
Then, time to eat! Dive into a paella, and before that, take a shot of cazalla to get your appetite going.
A typical Spanish siesta on the beach, and once you’ve shaken off the buzz, you can cruise around the impressive skatepark and brand-new polished concrete pump track on your longboard.
Welcome to a marvelous city where you can enjoy hardcore DH, the Mediterranean landscape, and its friendly locals.
